One of the biggest surprises of the day came from Spain’s Daniel Merida, who advanced from qualifying and defeated the experienced Adrian Mannarino, the tournament’s second seed, 4–6, 6–2, 6–2.
At just 21 years old, Merida confirms his strong recent form, having reached a career-high ranking and won a Challenger title earlier this year. After dropping the first set, the Spaniard took control of the match and dominated the next two sets, securing the biggest ATP-level win of his career.
On the Central Court, another notable result saw France’s Titouan Droguet defeat Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 6–4, 6–4.
Baez, last year’s finalist and one of the most consistent clay-court players on tour, entered the match as the favorite. However, Droguet imposed his game effectively and handled the key moments with confidence, earning an important victory over a Top 50 opponent.
For the 24-year-old Frenchman, this quarterfinal qualification confirms his steady progress in recent seasons, following consistent climbs in the rankings and strong performances at both ATP and Challenger level.
As a result of these matches, the quarterfinal lineup takes on a new dynamic, with players coming through qualifying or outside the seeded group building strong runs in Bucharest.
The ATP 250 Țiriac Open presented by UniCredit Bank continues at the Simona Halep National Tennis Center, with increasingly competitive matches as the tournament approaches its decisive stages.
